The Chicago Cubs today decided not to offer a 2021 contract to Kyle Schwarber, who is now a free agent. Schwarber has been a part of the organization for seven years, and was a postseason hero for the Cubs in 2015 and 2016. It’s just gonna take some time to adjust to this new reality.
On the decision to move forward without tendering Schwarber a contract, and on the possibility that the sides could later agree to a new deal, Cubs President Jed Hoyer spoke to the media tonight. Yes, a reunion is possible, but a free agent is a free agent.
Here’s Hoyer:
Jed Hoyer on Schwarber: “It was a hard conversation. I called Kyle. We’ll definitely keep the door open. We’ll continue to talk about ways to bring him back….We had a good conversation. He’s a legend. No question about that.”

Hoyer on Schwarber: “I don’t think he was surprised, with that being out there as a possibility. I don’t think he was blindsided. Obviously, he was disappointed.” … “I don’t think the door is closed (regarding a re-signing).”

Hoyer on Schwarber 2/2:
“…[our] affection and gratitude for all he’s done. I don’t think the door’s closed. … Listen, he’s always going to be a Cubs legend — there’s no question about that, as he should be.”
