BART is experiencing “major delays systemwide” and Powell Station temporarily closed for about two hours due to a fatal accident involving a person on the train tracks, the transit agency said Monday afternoon.

Powell Station reopened shortly after 5:30 p.m. with normal service being restored, according to BART.

The incident began about 3:30 p.m. Monday. Muni and AC Transit provided mutual aid during the system’s disruption.

Riders taking BART Monday afternoon after the incident happened reported long wait times, packed trains and confusion over the service changes.

BART’s yellow line running from Antioch to San Francisco International Airport was the only transbay line running its full route while police investigated the incident. Trains on the red and green lines were canceled temporarily. Trains on the blue line ran a shortened route through the transbay tube from Dublin/Pleasanton to Montgomery Station during the Powell Station closure.

BART said riders should continue to expect systemwide delays as it restores normal service. Details about the incident remained sparse as of 5:30 p.m. Monday.
