Bassnectar announced on Friday (July 3) that he’s taking a step back from his career. The DJ and artist, whose real name is Lorin Ashton, shared the news after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in a Your EDM story as well as on Instagram, where an account has been collecting allegations. Some of the allegations appear to go back years.

“I am stepping back from my career and I am stepping down from my position of power and privilege in this community because I want to take responsibility and accountability,” Ashton began in his statement, which he shared on social media. “I feel intense compassion for anyone I may have hurt. I truly hope you allow me a chance to work together toward hearing.”

The artist went on to claim that the “rumors” are “untrue,” but noted, “I realize some of my past actions have caused pain, and I am deeply sorry.”

Ashton also announced that he’ll no longer be involved with the non-profit organization Be Interactive: “I am handing off our nonprofit Be Interactive to a diverse team to continue without my involvement moving forward.”

Also stepping back from Be Interactive after allegations against Bassnectar surfaced is Lia Holland, the executive director. “As a survivor of childhood abuse, I stand with female survivors and will resign as the executive director of Be Interactive,” she tweeted on Independence Day.

Musician Mimi Page, who has collaborated with Bassnectar, also shared her support for one of the women after the allegations against Ashton came to light. “As a female collaborator of @bassnectar I am devastated,” Page tweeted on July 4. “For now, I send love, healing and support to the woman who came forward tonight. I send love and healing to fans in this community who’s hearts are also breaking.”
