Syracuse, N.Y. – Onondaga County today reported 48 new cases of coronavirus since Tuesday, the highest one-day total since May 25, according to county health officials. The increase is primarily due to a cluster of cases at Syracuse University, county officials said.
The university reported 20 new coronavirus cases among students today, the largest number reported in a single day this semester. University officials have blamed the surge in part on off-campus gatherings, including a party last week on Walnut Avenue.
For Onondaga County, the total number of cases since March is now 4,382. In recent weeks, the county has typically reported about 15 to 20 new cases a day, and rarely more than 30. The last time there were more than 48 was May 25, when there were 62, said county spokesman Justin Sayles.
There are 209 active cases in the county, up 34 from Tuesday. Fourteen previously infected patients recovered from the virus and were released from isolation in the past day.
Of the 48 new cases today, 31 were attributed to community spread; 10 occurred in households with previous infections; two were blamed on travel from outside the area; and five were still being investigated.
No new deaths from Covid-19 have been reported in Onondaga County since Sept. 27. A total of 207 county residents have died from the virus.
There are 17 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals today. None is in critical condition, county officials reported.
Of all the coronavirus test results in Onondaga County during the past week, 1% were positive, according to the state health department.
