COVID-19 outbreak at Sacramento County jail prompts investigation – KCRA Sacramento

Health and corrections officials are investigating a COVID-19 outbreak at the Sacramento County Main Jail and Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center.As of Friday, there were 32 positive coronavirus cases at the main jail in Sacramento and 37 at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center in Elk Grove. The outbreak was confirmed Monday, according to a statement from Sacramento County Public Health. It’s unclear how many of the positive cases are among incarcerated people versus staff, but Sacramento County Public Health said that currently, “all identified confirmed cases are in unvaccinated individuals.” “All inmates are offered vaccinations and provided education about the benefits of vaccination,” the statement added. Health officials say contact tracing is underway along with testing at both facilities as authorities work to to identify the source of the outbreak. “Quarantine protocols are in place and extensive testing is being done,” Sacramento County Public Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye said in a prepared statement.
