A Humboldt County resident in their 70s has died with COVID-19, bringing to 57 the number of residents who have died with the virus. The staff of the Department Operations Center offer their condolences to the person’s family, friends and caregivers and all those who have lost someone to the virus.
Ninety-one new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Humboldt County today. The total number of county residents who have tested positive for the virus now stands at 5,808.
Six new hospitalizations were also reported, including one person in their 40s, two in their 50s and three in their 60s.
Anyone with a known exposure to the virus should quarantine for 10 to 14 days and test only if they have symptoms or three to five days after exposure. Those who have symptoms and who were told by a health care professional to test should get tested as soon as they can. Most of those who contract the virus can be treated at home while taking care not to infect others. Anyone who tests positive is required by order of the Health Officer of Humboldt County to isolate themselves in their home for 10 days from the date of their positive test or onset of symptoms. After that period has passed, they may be released from isolation when at least 24 hours have passed without fever or worsening symptoms. In addition to isolating, those who test positive should rest, stay hydrated and treat their symptoms, which may include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, body aches, sore throat, runny nose, headache, diarrhea or vomiting. COVID-positive individuals should seek medical care if any emergency warning signs develop, including fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, confusion or inability to wake up. These symptoms may indicate complications such as severe pneumonia, which can lead to Acute Respiratory Distress. Notify the 911 operator or the emergency facility to that the person seeking care has or may have COVID-19.
Getting vaccinated remains the single most important thing eligible residents can do to prevent serious illness from COVID-19. Vaccine is available at Public Health vaccination clinics located throughout the county. Walk-ins are welcome, or sign up in advance at MyTurn.ca.gov. The Pfizer vaccine is approved for children as young as 12 years old. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are authorized for those 18 and older. Full protection from the vaccine is achieved two weeks after receiving the second dose of a two-dose series or two weeks after receiving a single-dose vaccine.
