Monday marked the Golden 1 Center’s 5-year anniversary since it opened its doors to live music, shows and games in Sacramento. The venue’s first-ever event on Oct. 4, 2016, was Paul McCartney — who played again the very next night. It has also been the home of the Sacramento Kings. The center was built with the intention of boosting economic development in the downtown area. Since its inception, Golden 1 Center officials said the venue has been the hub of more than $6.5 billion of investment in the greater downtown area. Fifty-nine development projects were completed, 28 are under construction and 81 more are being proposed.”I think we’ve just seen the start of it,” John Rinehart, president of business operations for the Sacramento Kings, told KCRA 3. “Five years is not that long of a time to see such an economic development of a downtown corridor.” After being closed to visitors for more than a year during coronavirus-related shutdowns, events are making a comeback and businesses surrounding the arena say they are seeing more customers. As a result of the pandemic, ticket holders will see new safety protocols at the Golden 1 Center, including needing proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative test. Masks will also be required inside at all times except when eating or drinking. Rinehart said the venue’s calendar is filling up for the next six months. The Eagles, Phish, Dan and Shay, Andrea Bocelli, Harry Styles and Disney on Ice are just a few of the performances on the horizon. “I come here for drinks, happy hour, good food, and to gather with my friends,” Fee Chang told KCRA 3. A long-time Sacramento resident, she said the development around the Golden 1 Center is “amazing” and provides a place for her to socialize with loved ones. The Clubhouse Sports Grille & Bar opened its doors on K Street across the street from DOCO in spring 2021 to be close to the Golden 1 Center. “Pre-pandemic, it was a buzzing area especially up and down K Street,” owner Pat Kashani told KCRA 3. “That’s what we signed on for, to ride that wave.” Bob Martinez and his wife attended the first Kings game at the Golden 1 Center five years ago. They say it’s important to them to continue supporting the local businesses downtown to help the area continue on the upward path it was on before the coronavirus pandemic began.”I hope it continues to improve,” Martinez said. “That’s what we need.”
