The Pennsylvania Department of Health released new COVID-19 data on Tuesday about breakthrough cases, which are instances when people have been vaccinated but still contract the virus. “With nearly seven million Pennsylvanians fully vaccinated, the data makes it clear: the vaccines are safe and effective at preventing severe illness from COVID-19,” acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam said at a news conference at Lancaster General Hospital. “The overwhelming majority of the COVID-19 related cases, hospitalizations and deaths in Pennsylvania occurred in people who were not vaccinated,” Beam said. “In fact, the data shows that compared to unvaccinated people, fully vaccinated Pennsylvanians are seven times less likely to get COVID-19, and eight times less likely to die from COVID-19.”DOH data on breakthrough infections (as of Jan. 2021)97 percent of COVID-19-related deaths were in unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people.
