The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up Wednesday, staging a tepid rebound as investors tried to gauge the strength of the economic recovery.

The S&P rose 0.2% in late-morning trading. The broad stocks gauge fell for the sixth time in seven trading days Tuesday. It remains close to 2% below the all-time high it notched in early September.
