Iowa’s COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to rise as the total number of positive cases surpassed 290,000.The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 1,930 new COVID-19 cases and five additional deaths Thursday.As of 10 a.m., the health department reported 291,394 total positive cases, 251,660 total recoveries and 4,065 total deaths since the start of the pandemic. A day earlier, the health department reported 289,464 total cases and 4,060 total deaths. Of Iowa’s 4,065 deaths, 3,728 list COVID-19 as the underlying cause, while 337 list it as a contributing factor.State data shows 1,380,542 Iowans have been tested for COVID-19. A total of 3,185,108 tests have been administered in the state. Iowa’s 14-day positivity rate climbed from 14.1% to 14.5%, but the 7-day positivity rate declined from 12.4% to 12.2%.There are now 52 counties reporting a 14-day positivity rate greater than 15%. That’s down from 54 a day earlier. There are 17 counties with a rate greater than 20%, up from 15 a day earlier. Monroe County continues to lead the state with an increasing positivity rate now at 33.5%.COVID-19 hospitalizations increased for a third straight day in Iowa. There are now 613 patients hospitalized with the virus, up from 604 a day earlier. The number of patients admitted in the last 24 hours decreased from 125 to 97. There are 119 patients in intensive care and 52 patients on ventilators. Iowa reports approximately 2,740 hospital beds, 368 ICU beds and 899 ventilators available.Hospitalization analysis shows 425 patients had a primary COVID-19 diagnosis, while 188 were hospitalized for another cause but tested positive. State data shows 64% of those hospitalized are age 60 or older. Four percent are under 30.The number of Iowa’s long-term care facilities reporting COVID-19 outbreaks continues a rapid decline. There are now 88 facilities reporting outbreaks. There were 91 facilities with outbreaks a day earlier, and 105 reporting outbreaks on Monday. The state reports 3,448 positive cases and 2,194 recoveries within those infected facilities.
